Photonic crystal-based functional cosmetics using cholesteric liquid crystal

Cholestric liquid crystal can selectively reflect the wavelength light which is corresponded to its helical twist chiral pitch length. Therefore it may be anticipated that UV, visible light and near IR can be reflected by cholestric liquid crystal with the chiral pitches around 300 ~ 1100 nm on the basis of selective reflection of cholesteric liquid crystal.

In this study, we investigated functional cosmetic applications for UV and near IR screen in addition to color cosmetics through chiral pitch control using cholestreric liquid crystal mixtures composed of various kinds of cholesteryl compound.
